Trump announces plans to begin pardoning Jan. 6 rioters on inaugural day

President-elect Donald Trump has stated in a recent interview that he plans to start pardoning individuals involved in the Jan. 6, 2021 insurrection at the Capitol on his first day in office. He mentioned that he would look at individual cases and act quickly. Trump has previously referred to the jailed insurrectionists as political prisoners and has expressed his desire to pardon them since his reelection campaign. However, he did not rule out exceptions for individuals who are radical or crazy. His comments come after President Joe Biden pardoned his son, Hunter Biden, earlier this year. The ongoing prosecution of those involved in the Capitol riot is said to be the most sprawling federal investigation in U.S. history, with officials expecting to arrest up to a thousand more people. The attack resulted in the deaths of five individuals, and at least four police officers who responded to the riots died by suicide in the months following the incident. The Department of Justice reported that over 1,572 defendants have been charged, with over 1,251 convicted or pleading guilty, and at least 645 sentenced to incarceration. Trump’s plans for pardons have been closely watched, as they are expected to provide relief to those convicted or facing trial in connection with the Capitol attack.
