Long Beach State edges out Hawaii in overtime to secure victory in Big West opener.

The Hawaii women’s basketball team suffered a heartbreaking 73-69 overtime loss to Long Beach State in their Big West opener at the Stan Sheriff Center on Saturday night. Despite Point guard Lily Wahinekapu’s 20 points, the team couldn’t protect a late three-point lead, ending a 13-game winning streak in Big West home games. Head coach Laura Beeman credited Long Beach State for their game plan and physical play.

Lily’s sister, Jovi Lefotu, returned from an absence and scored nine points in a season-high 26 minutes. However, UH succumbed to Long Beach State’s physicality and struggled with transition defense and rebounding. Frustrated by the loss, Beeman acknowledged the team’s need to improve and move forward.

Long Beach State’s Savannah Tucker and Patricia Chung played pivotal roles in their victory, with Tucker scoring 23 points and Chung hitting a crucial go-ahead 3-pointer in overtime. Coach Amy Wright expressed displeasure with the challenging schedule that required her team to play on short notice, but was proud of their resilience.

The game was closely contested, with neither team holding a significant lead throughout. UH freshman Ritorya Tamilo stood out with 14 points, nine rebounds, and six blocks. Despite the loss, the team remains focused on upcoming non-conference games before resuming Big West play in January.

UH will face Arkansas-Pine Bluff next before participating in the San Diego Invitational. Beeman emphasized the need to address defensive lapses and rebounding issues moving forward. The team is determined to bounce back and improve as they navigate through the challenging Big West competition.
