US launches air strikes on ISIL targets in Syria following al-Assad’s removal | Conflict News

The United States has conducted more than 75 air strikes on ISIL targets in Syria after the collapse of Syrian President Bashar al-Assad’s regime. The US Central Command stated that the strikes were aimed at preventing the armed group from exploiting the end of al-Assad’s rule and included targets such as ISIL leaders, operatives, and camps.

CENTCOM confirmed that there were no civilian casualties as a result of the strikes, which utilized warplanes including the Boeing B-52 Stratofortress and McDonnell Douglas F-15 Eagle. General Michael Erik Kurilla emphasized that ISIS would not be allowed to reconstitute in Syria and that organizations found to be supporting the group would be held accountable.

Outgoing US President Joe Biden described al-Assad’s fall as both a “moment of risk” and a “historic opportunity” for the Syrian people to build a better future. Biden credited the decline in support for al-Assad from Russia, Iran, and Hezbollah as a key factor in his downfall.

The sudden end of 53 years of al-Assad family rule has created uncertainty in the Middle East, including the presence of 900 US troops in Syria. President-elect Donald Trump, in response, indicated that the US should not get involved in any conflict in the country.

Meanwhile, HTS leader Abu Mohammed al-Julani celebrated al-Assad’s fall as an opportunity to turn Syria into a beacon for the Islamic nation and the beginning of a new history for the region. Al-Julani assured Syrians that this victory was for all of them and marked a significant moment in their collective history.
