Former University Park, Maryland Mayor Joel Biermann is facing nearly 30 charges related to child pornography and child sexual abuse material. Biermann, 46, served as mayor from 2022 to June 2024 and was charged with 22 counts of possessing child sexual abuse images as well as six other felony charges related to solicitation. Law enforcement officials found a trove of disturbing materials in his possession, including electronic devices with tens of thousands of files containing abusive materials, some mentioning rape, torture, and bondage. The files showed naked children, many prepubescent, being sexually abused and raped by adults. Additionally, Biermann allegedly solicited explicit images of young boys on Facebook and paid over $800 to an unknown person for these images. The investigation also found a blow-up doll resembling a child in his office. Biermann made his first court appearance in Prince George’s County District Court on Tuesday and had a formal bond hearing on Wednesday. The town of University Park stated that Biermann no longer has an official position and that they are ready to assist in the investigation as needed. USA TODAY was unable to find a lawyer representing Biermann.
