Donald Trump Criticizes Juneteenth Celebrations

President Donald Trump recently signed an executive order to extend the deadline for a TikTok ban. In a separate social media post, he expressed criticism towards Juneteenth celebrations, suggesting that America has “too many non-working holidays,” which he claimed cost the country “BILLIONS OF DOLLARS” and burden workers. Juneteenth, observed on June 19, commemorates the emancipation of the last remaining enslaved Black Americans in the Confederacy in 1865 and gained national prominence during the racial justice protests of 2020, leading to its recognition as a federal holiday in 2021 by President Joe Biden.

Trump did not clarify the specific costs he referenced in his post, noting that private companies are not mandated to close on federal holidays; many choose to remain open. On Juneteenth, while national banks and government offices were closed, major retailers like Walmart and Target operated as usual. When asked if Trump planned to commemorate the holiday, White House Press Secretary Karoline Leavitt indicated she was not aware of any proclamation.

Historically, Trump has recognized Juneteenth, but his approach has sparked controversy. Notably, in 2020, he scheduled his first rally post-COVID-19 lockdowns in Tulsa, Oklahoma—a location marked by a tragic massacre of Black Americans—on the same day as Juneteenth, though he later changed the date. This juxtaposition of events highlights Trump’s complex and often contentious relationship with racial and cultural issues in America, especially during a period of heightened awareness and sensitivity surrounding these topics.
