Waipa Foundation Showcases Hawaiian Heritage Through Food and Farm Tours
Kauai, HI — Nestled on the North Shore of Kauai, the Waipa Foundation is celebrating centuries of tradition by inviting visitors to experience its rich cultural and agricultural heritage through its Food and Farm Tours. These immersive experiences showcase time-honored methods of cultivating the land, including vibrant taro patches and native foraging practices.
This summer, Waipa Foundation is hosting a series of events emphasizing the concept of ahupua’a—the traditional land division system that strategically integrates resources from the mountains to the sea. Executive Director Stacy Sproat highlighted increased participation in their youth and intern programs, which are thriving under expansive tents that have become a local landmark.
Visitors to the foundation are greeted with freshly brewed mamaki tea and a selection of seasonal fruits, setting the stage for a culinary journey that honors local ingredients. From harvesting sweet potato (‘uala’) to pounding poi, guests can fully engage in traditional practices. The tours culminate in a vibrant meal prepared by renowned cook Seneca Sproat, featuring dishes like Kalo spring rolls and sustainably sourced Kauai shrimp.
California visitors Rebecca and Bill Weeks shared their appreciation for the educational aspects of the tour, noting its connection to Hawaiian history and modern cultural practices.
Beyond the culinary delights, Sproat emphasizes the importance of preserving ancestral traditions for future generations. "Every step is intentional," she advises, underscoring the foundation’s commitment to sustainability and respect for the land.
Waipa Foundation offers Food and Farm Tours every Tuesday and Wednesday from 9:30 a.m. to 12:30 p.m., inviting both locals and tourists to discover the essence of aloha and the importance of nurturing the earth.
