11-Year-Old Gaza Survivor Arrives in Italy for Medical Care
MILAN, Italy – Adam al-Najjar, an 11-year-old boy, is now in Italy for medical treatment following a devastating Israeli air strike that claimed the lives of his father and nine siblings in Khan Younis, Gaza. Adam and his mother landed at Milan’s Linate Airport on Wednesday, greeted by Italian Foreign Minister Antonio Tajani, who presented Adam with a football. He was swiftly taken to Niguarda Hospital for urgent care.
The strike on May 23 left Adam as the sole survivor of his family, which included children aged between seven months and 12 years. Tragically, Adam’s father, Dr. Hamdi al-Najjar, succumbed to his injuries shortly after the attack. His mother, Dr. Alaa al-Najjar, had been working at Nasser Hospital during the airstrike.
Adam sustained serious burns and multiple fractures, particularly in his left arm, which has also suffered nerve damage. Despite the challenging recovery, his mother remains focused on his healing while grappling with the traumatic loss of her family. “I remember everything… But when I remember, it’s too painful,” she shared, emphasizing her commitment to Adam’s recovery.
Adam’s medical evacuation was facilitated by a media appeal from his uncle, prompting Tajani’s announcement of Italy’s willingness to assist. On the same day, 16 other injured Palestinian children and over 50 family members were also flown to Italy for treatment across various hospitals.
Since the onset of the conflict, the Italian government has provided medical care for 150 injured Palestinians. While Italy has historically supported Israel, recent months have seen officials expressing concerns over the escalating human toll in Gaza, noting that over 50,000 children have been reported killed or injured in the ongoing conflict, per UNICEF.
