Press Release: Widening Health Disparities in Hawaiʻi Amid Maui Wildfires
A new study from the University of Hawaiʻi Economic Research Organization reveals alarming trends in health and well-being among the state’s residents. Tracking 2,000 individuals since 2022, the study highlights that existing health disparities, particularly among non-white ethnic groups like Native Hawaiians and Pacific Islanders, have intensified significantly over the past two years.
The report, titled Hawaii’s Health and Wellbeing Journey Over Time – Monitoring Equity And Access, addresses key concerns such as mental health care access and food insecurity. The situation has worsened overall, particularly for low-income communities. Among Native Hawaiians and Pacific Islanders, the percentage reporting excellent health has plummeted from 44% to 31% within 18 months. For those living in poverty, the decline is even more dramatic—dropping from 40% to 23%.
Respondents indicated that mental health needs are increasingly unmet, with those not receiving necessary care rising from 5% to 22% since June 2023, particularly among young adults aged 18-34. Structural inequalities such as access to education and employment opportunities are exacerbating health challenges.
Ruben Juarez, a health economics professor and report co-author, attributed this decline to cumulative factors affecting well-being, including food and housing insecurity. Following the devastating Maui wildfires in August 2023, residents reported compounded health concerns, especially among those who were already vulnerable.
While some improvements were noted in access to general practitioners, deteriorating access to dental care and specialists remains a pressing issue. Juarez stated, "Focused investment in community-based mental health services and accessible healthcare is urgently needed."
As Hawaiʻi confronts these challenges, the report emphasizes the necessity for targeted policies to address health inequities affecting the most vulnerable populations.
