Survivors of FSU and Parkland mass shootings unite to demand change following tragedy

Florida State University senior Jason Leavy has survived both the 2018 shooting at Marjory Stoneman Douglas High School in Parkland and the recent mass shooting at FSU. Leavy was listening to his girlfriend’s presentation when the alert for an active shooter at FSU went out. He barricaded the door, as he did during the Parkland shooting. Leavy, who studies psychology, has personal experience with post-traumatic stress disorder and is frustrated by the lack of change in preventing mass shootings.

The FSU shooting was carried out by Phoenix Ikner, who used his stepmother’s gun to kill two people, Tiru Chabba and Robert Morales, and wound six others. Leavy attended the vigil for the victims and expressed disappointment in the lack of action to prevent these tragedies. He calls for common-sense gun legislation to address who can own guns and what types of guns are allowed.

Other survivors of the Parkland shooting, such as Joshua Gallagher and Stephanie Horowitz, also found themselves at FSU during the recent shooting, highlighting the prevalence of such incidents. Robbie Alhadeff, whose sister died in the Parkland shooting, emphasized the need for change to prevent further tragedies. The FSU Foundation has set up a fund to support those affected by the shooting, providing financial assistance to injured individuals, victims’ families, and impacted students. Donations can be made to the fund through the FSU Foundation’s website.
