The University of Hawaii has officially begun the process of hiring a new athletic director following the departure of Craig Angelos. University President Wendy Hensel has announced the enlistment of a national search firm and the formation of a 10-member search committee to find Angelos’ replacement. The search committee, including various prominent figures in the community, will work with Parker Executive Search to gather community input and develop a candidate profile.
The goal is to conduct finalist interviews in late May and announce the new hire by mid to late summer. Hensel emphasizes the importance of finding a leader who can navigate the challenges ahead, including the lack of a Division I football stadium since the closure of Aloha Stadium. The Rainbow Warriors have been playing at the Ching Complex on the Manoa campus since 2021.
Angelos, who was fired after 18 months, received a severance pay of $87,000, equivalent to a fourth of his annual salary. As an at-will employee, he reported directly to former UH president David Lassner, who retired on December 31.
The new athletic director will play a crucial role in Hawaii’s sports culture and economy, and Hensel will have the final say in the hiring decision. The search committee will begin meeting this month to work towards finding the right candidate to lead the university’s athletic department.
