Supportive demonstration held at UCLA for Students for Justice in Palestine

A protest was held on the UCLA campus in support of pro-Palestinian student groups that were recently suspended by the university. UCLA Chancellor Julio Frenk announced the temporary suspension of Students for Justice in Palestine and Graduate Students for Justice in Palestine after members of the groups reportedly harassed UC Regent Jay Sures, a supporter of Israel, and his family during a protest outside his home. The protesters allegedly left red handprints on the home and surrounded a vehicle, preventing a family member from leaving.

In response to Frenk’s message, the groups disputed the accusations of violence and stated that they reject the chancellor’s claims. About 100 people gathered on campus for the protest, which began at Royce Hall and later moved to Murphy Hall and around the campus.

This incident comes after a tumultuous year at UCLA, which saw multiple protests and controversies surrounding the university’s response to various events. Last year, a pro-Palestinian encampment was attacked by counterprotesters, leading to dozens of arrests and criticism of the lack of police intervention.

The Office of Student Conduct is conducting an administrative review of the situation, and if the reports prove true, disciplinary action may be taken. The protest at UCLA highlights the ongoing tensions and conflicts surrounding the Israeli-Palestinian conflict on college campuses.
