Lifeguards from North Shore save 15 people in rough surf conditions


Honolulu Ocean Safety personnel on the North Shore executed 15 rescues and about 10,000 preventative actions on Friday as high surf buffeted north and west shores across the state. Three men suffered injuries when large waves crashed into them while they stood on rocks between Ke Iki Beach and Sharks Cove. They declined transport to an emergency room after suffering multiple abrasions. A high surf warning was in place due to extra-large northwest swells, with waves measuring between 10 to 14 feet. The public is advised to stay away from affected shorelines, be prepared for road closures, and postpone entering or leaving channels during high surf warnings. Honolulu Ocean Safety warns against tidepools and rock shoreline formations during high surf. A complex gale low system south of the Aleutian Islands will continue to generate northwest swells, keeping surf elevated along north and west facing shores throughout the week.
