Three people, including a 90-year-old woman suffering from dementia, died in a house fire in Queens, New York over the weekend. The victims included a 56-year-old man found unconscious, a 54-year-old woman, and the 90-year-old woman who was the mother of the other two victims. The brother and daughter cared for their mother who would often wander due to her dementia.
The cause of the fire is being investigated by FDNY Fire Marshals, and the Office of the Chief Medical Examiner will determine the cause of death for the three victims. FDNY Chief of Department John Esposito stated that the fire started in the cellar and spread to the first and second floors, causing a heavy smoke condition throughout the building.
FDNY Fire Commissioner Robert Tucker expressed that it is unacceptable for fire deaths to occur and stated that the department will work to keep them low. Over 100 firefighters and EMS personnel responded to the blaze. The tragic incident has left the community and families of the victims devastated, with authorities expressing condolences and pledging to investigate the incident further to prevent future tragedies.
