The Franklin Fire in Malibu has grown to 2,200 acres, prompting mandatory evacuations for thousands of residents. The fire, which started near seaside mansions and Pepperdine University, has caused structures to be threatened as firefighters battle the wind-driven blaze. The Los Angeles County Fire Department and Cal Fire have provided real-time maps showing the fire’s perimeter and evacuation areas. The fire started east of Malibu Canyon Road and south of Piuma Road, with the Serra Retreat area also under evacuation. As students sheltered in the school’s library, they watched as the blaze intensified and the sky turned deep red. The cause of the fire is unknown at this time, but fire officials estimate that nearly 3 square miles of trees and dry brush have been burned. Stay tuned for updates on the Franklin Fire in Malibu.
