Luigi Mangione, the man suspected of killing UnitedHealthcare CEO Brian Thompson, was arrested in Altoona, Pennsylvania, after a dayslong search. Evidence found on him, including a 3D-printed handgun, a silencer, and fraudulent identifications, connected him to the fatal shooting. Mangione, a University of Pennsylvania graduate, is expected to be extradited to New York City to face a murder charge. The shooting of Thompson outside a Hilton hotel sparked public statements of support for his family as well as frustration towards the health insurance industry online.
Mangione comes from a well-known Baltimore family with a background in real estate and philanthropy. His cousin, Maryland state delegate Nino Mangione, released a statement expressing shock and devastation over his arrest.
Police discovered the gun, silencer, mask, and fake identifications in Mangione’s possession after he was reported by a customer at a McDonald’s. He presented a fake New Jersey driver’s license when approached by officers, and handwritten papers found on him expressed ill will towards corporate America.
The arrest of Mangione brings closure to the search for the masked gunman responsible for Thompson’s death. The motive behind the shooting remains unclear, but documents found on Mangione speak to his mindset and motivations. Authorities suspect he had been on a several-day trek around Pennsylvania before being captured in Altoona.
