Trade winds make a comeback, bringing gusty conditions

The National Weather Service has issued a High Wind Warning for the Big Island Summits starting at 6 AM HST on Monday. The warning comes as strong trades are expected to strengthen through mid-week, potentially reaching breezy to strong conditions with Wind Advisory conditions possible for windier areas. Additionally, wind speeds at the Big Island summits could reach warning levels as an upper level jet streak moves over the area.

While the first half of the week will see fairly dry and stable conditions, a combination of upper level dynamics and low level moisture moving up from the tropics could bring an increase in rain chances for windward areas across the eastern end of the state. Model guidance also suggests that an upper level low southeast of the island chain may retrograde westward, potentially enhancing trade wind showers on the Big Island.

However, there are still uncertainties in the models regarding the potential impacts of this upper level feature, particularly in terms of rainfall potential. In addition to the High Wind Warning for the Big Island Summits, a Small Craft Advisory is in effect for various waters around the state from midnight tonight to 6 PM HST on Wednesday. Residents and visitors are advised to stay updated on the changing weather conditions and take necessary precautions.
