Devin Askew to play for Long Beach State in Hawaii men’s basketball squad

The University of Hawaii basketball team had a tough day at the beach as they suffered a 76-68 loss to Long Beach State in their Big West opener. Despite committing 17 turnovers and struggling to contain Long Beach State’s star point guard Devin Askew, who scored a season-high 28 points, the Rainbow Warriors fell to 5-3 overall. Askew, a 5-star prospect, led the Beach to victory by dominating the game with his scoring, assists, rebounds, and steals.

The Beach, coached by former UH assistant Chris Acker, capitalized on the Rainbow Warriors’ turnovers and converted them into 27 points. Despite a strong performance from guard Marcus Greene and forward Gytis Nemeiksa, who both made their first UH starts, Hawaii could not keep up with Long Beach State’s tough defense and efficient shooting.

Head coach Eran Ganot expressed disappointment in his team’s performance, especially their lack of consistency and defensive lapses. Although the Rainbow Warriors had shown promise in previous games, they struggled to find their rhythm against Long Beach State’s tenacious defense and sharpshooting.

With their next league game against UC Santa Barbara on January 2, the Rainbow Warriors will need to regroup and focus on improving their ball security and defensive execution to bounce back from their loss to Long Beach State. Despite the setback, Coach Ganot remains optimistic about his team’s potential and believes that with more consistent play, they can turn things around in the competitive Big West conference.
