Protest Organized in Response to Cracker Barrel Denying Service to Special Education Students

Parents of special education students at Charles County Public Schools District’s Dr. James Craik Elementary School in Maryland were outraged after their children were denied service during a community-based instructional outing at a Cracker Barrel restaurant in Waldorf. The group of 11 students and seven staff members were refused service, despite notifying the restaurant in advance of their visit. The students, who have autism and significant cognitive disabilities, were treated rudely while waiting for a to-go order. After an hour of waiting, they were moved to wait outside on the school bus and ended up eating lunch back at the school.

Cracker Barrel issued an apology, citing a staffing challenge that caused confusion in handling the group’s request. They are working with the school district to understand what happened and make amends. However, parents, including Dustin Reed, expressed anger, sadness, and worry over the incident. Reed has organized a protest, scheduled for December 15th at the restaurant, to raise awareness about the treatment of children with different abilities. He hopes to show that these children should not be treated as less than anyone else.

The school district’s ACHIEVE and SOAR programs involve monthly community-based instruction outings to help students develop practical skills and socialize with the public. Despite efforts to accommodate the students, they were met with discrimination at Cracker Barrel, which has led to outrage among parents and calls for change. The protest aims to bring attention to the importance of inclusion and proper treatment of individuals with disabilities.
