Leinster’s new All Black signing Jordie Barrett made a positive debut, scoring a try and creating another. However, it was homegrown talent Sam Prendergast who shined the brightest, scoring two tries and racking up 20 points in a significant bonus point victory against Bristol in Pool 2. English sides faced disappointment on the opening weekend of the season, with six losses for Premiership teams and just two wins.
Despite facing early pressure, Leinster’s defensive solidity and strong bench made a visible difference in the game. Prendergast, compared to Johnny Sexton, displayed a good turn of pace and created opportunities for his team. The match was not ideal for Bristol’s deft offloading game, especially with their tactical lynchpin MacGinty leaving the game early due to injury.
Despite some early setbacks including two players being sent to the bin, Leinster managed to weather the storm and secure a victory against Bristol. Barrett, Prendergast, and van der Flier all found their names on the scoresheet, with Bristol only managing a late try in response. Leinster now looks ahead to their next match against Clermont Auvergne with the goal of pursuing a title that has narrowly eluded them in the past.
Bristol, on the other hand, was able to showcase their new women’s signing Ilona Maher during the match. The cold and blustery conditions on a Sunday night in December highlighted the resilience and dedication of rugby fans, separating the true believers from casual supporters.
