In response to a Red Flag Warning issued by the National Weather Service for leeward areas of all Hawaiian islands, Lt. Gov. Sylvia Luke signed an emergency proclamation on Thursday evening. The warning, in effect on Friday from 10 a.m. to 6 p.m., indicates conditions that are favorable for wildfires to start and spread quickly. As acting governor while Gov. Josh Green attends a National Governors Association meeting in Colorado, Luke emphasized the need for residents to avoid activities that could spark fires, such as campfires, outdoor grilling, or the use of power tools that could produce sparks. The public should also refrain from idling or parking vehicles on dry grass. The emergency proclamation allows for the rapid deployment of resources to mitigate risks from the expected weather conditions, suspending laws that might impede emergency functions. Additional resources can be found on various websites, including hwmo.org/ready-set-go, county fire department websites, and the Department of Land and Natural Resources Division of Forestry and Wildlife website. Residents are advised to stay informed by monitoring local news media and county emergency management agencies for updates and warnings about high-risk areas in their communities.
