The Honolulu Fire Department (HFD) has released a message urging Hawaii residents to celebrate the holidays safely by recognizing the potential dangers associated with firecrackers. Residents must obtain a permit before planning to ignite fireworks, which can only be purchased online by December 21 and picked up at selected Satellite City Halls through December 31. HFD officials remind those with permits to only purchase fireworks from licensed retail outlets, ignite them on smooth surfaces away from flammable materials, wear eye protection, read directions before use, and never handle them under the influence. In case of an emergency, keep a garden hose or bucket of water nearby. Unlawful practices include throwing firecrackers at people or animals, igniting them in public areas or above the first floor of a building, selling or giving them to minors, or transporting them in luggage. On Oahu, fireworks are only allowed to be lit from 9 p.m. on December 31 to 1 a.m. on January 1. The HFD encourages the public to obey laws and be considerate of others, as firecrackers can pose real danger. Their wish for the holiday season is for everyone to enjoy the New Year’s celebrations safely.
