Upcountry Maui school bus route reinstated

The Hawaii Department of Education announced that nearly 40 students in Upcountry Maui will have a ride to school once again starting Monday, December 9. This comes as the department reinstates one more bus route for Kekaulike High School. Ground Transport Inc. will service the bus route for the Baldwin, Kekaulike, Kulanihakoi, and Maui Complex areas. The department has successfully restored 81% of previously impacted routes and continues efforts to restore the remaining 22 suspended bus routes.

Ground Transport Inc. is recruiting new drivers with a starting pay of $32 an hour, offering paid training and benefits such as paid vacation, holidays, health insurance, dental, and 401k. The company is also looking into working with tour bus operators to help expand capacity. HIDOE will provide updates as more routes are restored.

The reinstatement of these bus routes will provide much-needed transportation for students in Upcountry Maui, ensuring they can get to school safely and on time. Families will be notified directly of the restored routes and any modifications. The efforts to recruit new drivers and expand capacity show a commitment to addressing the transportation challenges faced by schools in Hawaii.
