The University of Hawaii’s men’s volleyball, beach volleyball, water polo, and men’s swimming/diving programs will continue to be part of the Big West League as affiliate members following a recent decision by the Big West. The approval will allow these teams to maintain familiar rivalries and potentially host Big West championships, benefitting Hawaii fans and the community.
While the majority of UH sports will transition to the Mountain West Conference in 2026, the Big West’s waiver of a rule limiting affiliates to three teams ensures these four programs can remain in the league. It is uncertain whether UH will need to pay the $25,000 annual fee per affiliate team, as the Mountain West is expected to cover the $750,000 exit fee for the departing 15 teams.
UH has a longstanding history with the Big West, with the men’s volleyball team previously competing in the Mountain Pacific Sports Federation. UH’s volleyball success has added value to the league, with the Big West winning four of the last six NCAA Tournament championships.
Coach Charlie Wade expressed his pride in the Big West’s men’s volleyball league, which has grown since its inception in 2018. He views the league as the best in the country, with UH’s involvement dating back to discussions in 2010 that laid the groundwork for the creation of the league. This decision ensures the continued success of UH’s teams and the enhancement of men’s volleyball within the league.
