A tragic shooting at a Northern California Christian school has left two kindergarten students critically wounded. The suspected shooter, 56-year-old Glenn Litton, had a lengthy criminal history, with convictions related to fraud, theft, and identity theft. Litton was released from jail in San Bernardino County just two weeks prior to the shooting.
Despite Litton’s criminal past, law enforcement officials noted that he had no history of violent crime. He had a documented history of mental illness dating back to his teenage years, although a concrete diagnosis had not been found. Litton believed he was carrying out “counter-measures” by targeting children in response to America’s involvement in Middle East violence.
Litton gained entry to the Feather River School of Seventh-Day Adventists in Oroville by pretending to enroll a fictitious grandson. The shooting occurred at the private K-8 school with fewer than three dozen students.
Litton was found dead from a self-inflicted gunshot when deputies responded to reports of an active shooter at the school. Despite being a convicted felon and prohibited from possessing a firearm, Litton had somehow obtained a gun.
A candlelight vigil is planned for the victims of the shooting. The Seventh-Day Adventist Church, to which the school belongs, is a Christian denomination that believes in the imminent second coming of Christ. Law enforcement officials are continuing to investigate the motives behind the attack.
