Kirstin Downey: Ala Moana’s Valuable Cultural Site has Been Closed for Far Too Long

After being closed for more than five years, McCoy Pavilion at Ala Moana Park in Honolulu is undergoing renovations and is expected to reopen early next year. The pavilion, a historic and beloved gathering place that hosted cultural festivals and community events, has been missed by Oahu residents who have depended on it for various gatherings. Built in the 1920s as part of the New Deal initiative, McCoy Pavilion has a rich history and has hosted numerous events over the years.

The closure of McCoy Pavilion in 2019 was initially due to air conditioning issues, but the pandemic and structural problems further delayed its repair and reopening. The city is currently working on repairing tree root damage, renovating gates and walkways, and upgrading lighting and audiovisual systems. Despite the progress, some park-goers have expressed frustration at the slow pace of the renovations.

Groups like the Hawaiian Scottish Association, which used to host an annual festival at McCoy Pavilion, are eagerly awaiting its reopening as they have had to find alternative venues in the meantime. While the city hopes to have all renovations completed by early next year, some residents are concerned about the pace of the work and are anxious to see McCoy Pavilion restored to its former glory.
