Kimo Alameda was sworn in as Hawaii island’s mayor at an inauguration ceremony attended by Gov. Josh Green, Lt. Gov. Sylvia Luke, and hundreds of others. The event took place at the Kaleiopapa Convention Center on the grounds of the Outrigger Kona Resort & Spa in Keauhou, reflecting Alameda’s campaign pledge of bringing geographic equity to the county’s top office. County Prosecutor Kelden Waltjen and the nine County Council members also took the oath of office at the ceremony.
In his speech, Alameda emphasized the importance of geographic equity and celebrating public safety, recreation, and county workers. Waltjen spoke about retaining Hawaii island’s youth population, while County Council Chair Holeka Inaba highlighted the significance of the state motto and affirming the sovereignty of Hawaii.
The ceremony, which included cultural performances and official oaths, highlighted a new era for Hawaii County. The event closed with a performance of “Hawai‘i Aloha” led by kumu hula Lorna Lim. This inauguration marks a new chapter for Hawaii island, filled with promise and opportunities for growth and positive change. The elected officials pledged to uphold the constitution and discharge their duties to the best of their abilities, demonstrating their commitment to serving the people of the land with aloha.
