The Supreme Court will decide whether U.S. citizens harmed in terrorist attacks in Israel can sue the Palestine Liberation Organization and Palestinian Authority under the Anti-Terrorism Act. The families of victims sued the organizations, but a 2016 appeals court decision threw out a $655.5 million judgment, ruling that the attacks were not sufficiently connected to the U.S. to be considered in U.S. courts. Congress amended the law, but lower courts rejected the changes. The Justice Department and families are asking the Supreme Court to review the ruling, arguing that the original law serves vital national interests in deterring terrorism, compensating victims, and promoting peace in the Middle East. The justices are expected to hear the case next year.
