Big Wave surfers in Hawaii are eagerly awaiting the call for the annual Eddie Aikau surfing competition at Waimea Bay. Surf Forecaster Pat Caldwell explained that extreme winds and proximity are crucial factors in forecasting the massive waves needed for The Eddie. The swell at Waimea Bay must reach 15 to 20 feet with wave periods of 18 to 20 seconds for the competition to go ahead. Forecasters also monitor how the swell changes as it passes through the Hawaiian islands, with last year exceeding expectations. This year, The Eddie will have a new sponsor and the opening ceremonies are scheduled for December 6th at Waimea Bay. The event will be live-streamed on KHON2’s platforms, allowing surfing fans to witness the world’s top Big Wave surfers take on the legendary waves of Waimea Bay. Stay tuned to find out if The Eddie will go ahead this year and prepare for some epic surfing action in Hawaii.
