Freight workers in Kalihi discovered an opossum hiding in a 40-foot shipping container, marking the second time in as many months that this type of animal has been found in Honolulu. The opossum, measuring about 1.5 to 2 feet in length, was captured by agriculture inspectors called to the scene. The animal likely entered the container when it was loaded in California. This discovery raises concerns about the potential for diseased animals to enter the state, as opossums can carry parasites and other diseases. In the past, several opossums have made their way to Hawaii as stowaways on cargo vessels, with the most recent incident occurring in 2016. The Hawaii Department of Agriculture is testing the captured opossum for rabies as a precaution. If anyone spots an illegal animal, they are encouraged to call the statewide pest hotline. This incident highlights the ongoing challenge of invasive species entering Hawaii and the efforts required to prevent their introduction.
