HPU Men’s Basketball Emerges Victorious in First TV Game at the Shark Tank

Hawaii Pacific University’s men’s basketball team put on a spectacular show at their home gym, the Shark Tank, in their PacWest Conference opener against Hawaii Hilo. The Sharks secured a dominant 88-71 victory, with guard Sherman Brashear leading the charge with 25 points. This game marked the first televised event from the former St. Francis School gym, airing on Spectrum Sports.

Coach Jesse Nakanishi expressed his gratitude for the opportunity, which had been two years in the making. The production team, Da Crew, ensured a seamless broadcast, highlighting not only the basketball program but also the entire university. The Sharks showcased their skills by assisting on 25 of their 32 field goals and outrebounding the Vulcans 39-14.

HPU’s strong performance was fueled by Brashear’s scoring prowess, along with contributions from Pavle Kuzmanovic, Jonas Visser, and Charlie Weber. The team’s execution and shooting accuracy helped secure a significant lead by halftime, ultimately leading to a successful home opener.

Despite the loss, Hawaii Hilo coach Kaniela Aiona acknowledged HPU’s superior play and emphasized the need for his team to improve steadily. Looking ahead, HPU aims to capitalize on the momentum from this game and attract a larger following at future events. Nakanishi remains optimistic about the program’s growth and potential for more televised games in the future.
