HDOA warns bird and poultry owners following influenza discovery

The Hawaii Department of Agriculture is advising poultry and bird owners to be vigilant in looking for signs of avian influenza after the detection of H5 avian influenza in a wastewater sample from Oahu. Although there are no reports of avian influenza cases in humans or animals in Hawaii, the Department of Health emphasizes that the overall risk to Oahu and state residents remains low.

The virus was found for the first time at a wastewater sampling site in Oahu, with the sample collected on November 7. The state has been conducting routine surveillance for the virus since 2015, following the detection of highly pathogenic avian influenza along the Pacific flyway, which includes Hawaii.

HDOA has stringent bird import laws, including permits, inspections, health certificates, and identification requirements to prevent the spread of avian influenza. Poultry and bird owners are cautioned against touching sick or dead birds without proper protective equipment, with symptoms including sudden death, lack of energy, and respiratory issues.

Residents are encouraged to report sick or dead birds, especially in cases of multiple or unusual deaths. Poultry and bird owners who notice high mortality in their flocks are advised to contact their veterinarians and the Division of Animal Industry.
