One in four Americans are contemplating skipping Thanksgiving to avoid political discussions

A recent survey conducted by Spruce has revealed that a significant number of Americans are feeling stressed about politics impacting their Thanksgiving plans. The survey, which included 2,000 participants from all 50 states, found that 64% of Americans are experiencing election-related stress, with 23% even considering skipping Thanksgiving altogether to avoid potential family tensions.

Among the key findings of the survey are that 59% of participants are concerned about political disagreements causing tension at Thanksgiving gatherings, while 49% are in favor of implementing a complete politics conversation ban for all guests and family members. Additionally, 52% of respondents cited Trump-supporting family members as a source of election-related anxiety, while 48% pointed to Harris-supporting family members.

In response to these findings, family and relationship experts at Spruce have offered some advice on how to navigate Thanksgiving celebrations without getting caught up in political discussions. They recommend setting boundaries ahead of time to ensure a “no politics” rule is enforced with guests, avoiding having the news playing on TVs during the gathering, and providing distractions like board games.

If tensions do arise, experts advise knowing when to walk away from a heated conversation. By taking these steps, families can hopefully enjoy a peaceful and stress-free Thanksgiving celebration this year.
