Hula show comes back to Waikiki for the first time in 22 years, free for all

The iconic Kodak Hula Show in Waikiki, which ran for 65 years before shutting down in 2002, will be making a comeback in the form of the Kilohana Hula Show. This free one-hour show, inspired by the original, will debut on February 15 at the Tom Moffatt Waikiki Shell’s amphitheater. The show is a partnership between the Council for Native Hawaiian Advancement (CNHA) and the Honolulu City and County, with CNHA underwriting $125,000 a month raised through private donations.

The Kilohana Hula Show will feature 18 dancers from award-winning halau, musicians, a chanter, and an emcee, including Kimo Kahoano, who will be returning as an emcee. The show aims to showcase Hawaii’s culture and history through music, chants, and the participation of kupuna.

In addition to the hula show, CNHA has enlisted the help of Native Hawaiian plant specialist Rick Barboza to reintroduce 500 native plants at the Waikiki Shell, as well as open a shop featuring locally made products. Efforts will also be made to reduce traffic congestion around the events by promoting the use of public transportation and encouraging walking from hotels.

The Kilohana Hula Show is a tribute to the legacy of the Kodak Hula Show, aiming to bring back the cultural richness and talent of Hawaiian music and hula to the Waikiki community. With a focus on authenticity and cultural significance, the show represents a celebration of Hawaii’s heritage and a way to connect locals and visitors to the island’s traditions.
