Holland Joins Council as Newest Member

Fern Anuenue Holland was recently sworn in as the newest member of the Kauai County Council at the Kauai War Memorial Convention Hall. Despite a challenge filed with the Hawaii Supreme Court regarding the council race, the inauguration proceeded as scheduled. The challenge alleges an overage occurred during the 2024 General Election, affecting the election results. Holland edged out incumbent Council Member Ross Kagawa by 108 votes, securing her place on the council.

During a pre-inauguration meeting, Mel Rapozo was confirmed as the council chair, with Kipukai Kualii named as the council vice chair. Former mayor Bernard P. Carvalho Jr. received the most votes in the election and joined Holland, Rapozo, Kualii, and other council members in their roles. Key appointments were made, with Jade Tanigawa as county clerk, Lyndon Yoshioka as deputy county clerk, and Rebecca Like as the prosecuting attorney.

Various committees were also established, with Carvalho and Cowden leading the Public Works and Veterans Services Committee, Holland and Kaneshiro in charge of the Parks and Recreation/Transportation Committee, Bulosan and Carvalho overseeing the Planning Committee, and Kualii and Bulosan heading the Housing and Intergovernmental Relations Committee. Cowden and Holland will lead the Public Safety and Human Services Committee, while Kaneshiro and Kualii will take charge of the Finance and Economic Development Committee. Rapozo and Kualii were appointed to lead the Committee of the Whole. Overall, the newly sworn-in Kauai County Council members and appointed officials are ready to serve their community and address important issues facing the county.
