Crew’s search for missing woman in Pennsylvania mine halted due to dangerous conditions in sinkhole

Authorities in Unity Township, Pennsylvania, are still searching for missing grandmother Elizabeth Pollard, who is believed to have fallen into a sinkhole near an abandoned coal mine. The mine has been deemed too unstable for underground search operations, but crews remain hopeful that Pollard will be found alive.

Pollard, 64, was reported missing by her relatives, and her vehicle with her granddaughter inside was found near the sinkhole location. The roof of the mine has collapsed, making it unsafe for search teams to enter. Search efforts are ongoing on the surface using electronic devices, cameras, heavy equipment, and search dogs.

The sinkhole is a result of subsidence from coal mining activity in the area. Despite extensive search efforts, including the use of drones and thermal imaging equipment, Pollard has not been located. Family members described Pollard as a kind woman who loved animals and enjoyed going out to have fun.

Authorities are keeping access to the sinkhole area tightly controlled to ensure the safety of rescuers. Pollard’s son, Axel Hayes, expressed hope that his mother will be found safe and returned to them. The community is holding out hope for a positive outcome as the search for Elizabeth Pollard continues.
