The University of Hawaii women’s basketball team secured a 50-47 comeback victory against Fresno State on Black Friday in a game that featured a unique scoring error. Despite initially making four free throws that counted as two points due to a mistake by officials, Lily Wahinekapu ultimately sealed the win with two more successful free throws. Head coach Laura Beeman described the win as “an ugly win” but emphasized the team’s resilience in the second half. Freshman Ritorya Tamilo led the team with 16 points while Wahinekapu contributed 12 points and four steals. Both teams displayed similar performance in various stats, including rebounding and blocked shots. The victory improved the Wahine’s record to 4-1, while Fresno State fell to 5-2. The game was part of the American Savings Bank Rainbow Wahine Showdown, where the top-ranked UCLA team also secured a dominant win. The Wahine will face Tennessee-Martin next before taking on UCLA and aim to continue their winning streak in the tournament. Despite the scoring error and challenges faced during the game, the Hawaii team showcased their determination and ability to secure a hard-fought victory.
