A 31-year-old man from Los Angeles, Raj Matharu, was indicted for attempting to smuggle over 30 pounds of methamphetamine onto an Australia-bound flight from LAX. The drugs were hidden in clothes, which had been “washed” into the fabric to avoid detection. Matharu was arrested at the airport after screening personnel noticed irregularities in his luggage. The methamphetamine-impregnated clothes included a variety of items, such as shirts, sweaters, socks, and boxers, as well as a set of onesie pajamas designed to look like a cow. Matharu faces a federal charge of possession of methamphetamine with intent to distribute, and if convicted, he could face a prison term ranging from 10 years to life. U.S. Attorney Martin Estrada commended law enforcement officers for catching the unusual smuggling attempt and emphasized the importance of fighting drug trafficking to save lives and protect communities from the harmful effects of narcotics. Matharu was released on a $10,000 bond pending an arraignment hearing scheduled for December 2 in federal court in Los Angeles.
