Kapolei Middle School in Hawaii has recently faced criticism for distributing biased class materials that portray former President Donald Trump negatively and Vice President Kamala Harris in a positive light. The school handed out a two-page document to students comparing the stances of the Republican and Democratic presidential candidates on various issues. Trump was presented as trying to overturn the 2020 election and take children away from their parents, while Harris was praised for her stance on immigration.
Some parents expressed concerns about the biased nature of the materials, with one parent describing themselves as “very upset” upon learning of the content. However, others applauded the school for engaging students in politics ahead of the 2024 election.
The Hawaii State Teachers Association defended the teaching materials, stating that student discussion of issues with opposing points of view is an important part of the learning process. The association emphasized the importance of age-appropriate civic education in developing students’ awareness of the US Constitution, individual rights, and social responsibility.
The state’s Department of Education explained that the materials were based on a New York Times article and simplified to make the information accessible to young students. The department acknowledged the potential for perceived imbalances when presenting nuanced political topics to younger audiences but remained committed to fostering a balanced learning environment.
