After 20 years on the run, fugitive Daniel Andreas San Diego wanted for Bay Area bombings, is arrested in the UK.

After more than 20 years on the run, suspected animal rights extremist Daniel Andreas San Diego was arrested in Britain for bombings in the San Francisco area, officials reported. San Diego, now 46, faced charges for planting bombs at a biotechnology company in Emeryville and a nutritional products company in Pleasanton, although no injuries were reported. The bombings were linked to animal rights extremism and targeted companies with ties to Huntingdon Life Sciences, known for using animals in experiments.

San Diego, who had been under surveillance by the FBI in 2003, had disappeared at a transit station in San Francisco and had been the first domestic terrorism suspect added to the FBI’s Most Wanted Terrorist List in 2009. Numerous sightings had been reported but he remained elusive until his recent arrest in Wales. FBI Director Christopher Wray emphasized the FBI’s commitment to holding fugitives accountable, stating that violence and destruction are not the right ways to express views in the country.

San Diego, originally from an affluent Marin County suburb, had a background in computer networking and was an experienced sailor. The arrest in Wales came as a surprise, given the distance from San Francisco where the bombings occurred. San Diego’s extradition to the U.S. is pending, and he faces a lengthy legal process for his alleged crimes. The arrest marks a significant development in the case of the long-sought-after fugitive in the San Francisco bombings.
