83-Year-Old Man to Celebrate Thanksgiving in Newly Rebuilt Kula Residence

Thomas Liu, an 83-year-old man from Kula, Hawaii, recently celebrated the completion of his newly rebuilt home after losing his original residence in the August 8, 2023, Lahaina wildfires. The two-bedroom, 860-square-foot cottage will serve as his temporary residence while work is being completed on his main house on Kulalani Drive.

Maui Mayor Richard Bissen and Kumu Kaponoai Molitau joined Liu for a blessing ceremony, emphasizing the importance of dedication and commitment in overcoming challenges. Liu expressed gratitude for the love, generosity, and support he received from various sources, including family, friends, strangers, and government agencies.

This is the second home to be rebuilt following the wildfires, with the first home in the Lahaina Disaster Area being blessed the previous week for Mau and Ariel Ah Hee and their two sons. Maui County reported that Liu’s property was one of 26 homes impacted by the fires in the upcountry area.

The Recovery Permit Center in Kula has approved four building permits, with nine more currently under review. The County anticipates more survivors will be able to return to their homes before Christmas. The rebuilding efforts serve as a symbol of hope and resilience for the community as they recover from the devastating wildfires.
