Lahaina Family Finished Rebuilding First Home in Fire-Affected Area

The Ah Hee family in Lahaina is celebrating Thanksgiving in their newly rebuilt home after losing their original residence in a devastating wildfire 15 months ago. The family, consisting of Mau, Ariel, and their two sons, worked with Habitat for Humanity Maui to construct their new home, which passed its final inspection recently. They are the first West Maui residents to replace a home destroyed in the fire, which also claimed the lives of 102 people and thousands of structures.

The rebuilding efforts in Lahaina have been challenging, but progress is being made, with over 120 homes currently being rebuilt in fire-affected areas. Habitat for Humanity Maui is also launching a Disaster Recovery Program to help families address post-fire financing gaps, offering bridge loans and loan forgiveness to eligible families.

The Ah Hee family’s journey back home has been compared to the pioneering voyages of their ancestors, symbolizing hope and new growth for the community. The completion of their home is seen as a significant milestone in the ongoing recovery efforts in Lahaina following the wildfire. The community has shown resiliency and unity in working together to rebuild, with a spirit of determination and commitment.

The Ah Hee family is grateful for the support they have received and the resources available to aid in their rebuilding process. Their new home serves as a beacon of hope and a reminder of the strength and perseverance of the Lahaina community in the face of adversity.
