Trump is thinking about appointing former intelligence chief Grenell for Ukraine role

President-elect Donald Trump is considering appointing Richard Grenell, his former intelligence chief, as a special envoy for the Russia-Ukraine conflict. Grenell, who served as Trump’s ambassador to Germany and acting director of national intelligence, would play a key role in Trump’s efforts to end the war. While there is currently no special envoy for the conflict, Trump is considering creating the role. Grenell’s previous statements suggesting the creation of “autonomous zones” and hesitation about Ukraine joining NATO could give Ukraine’s leaders pause. Despite this, Grenell’s supporters highlight his diplomatic experience and knowledge of European affairs. The final decision on the appointment has not been made, and there is no guarantee that Grenell will accept the role. Trump had promised during his campaign to swiftly resolve the conflict, but has not disclosed his plans to do so. Grenell was previously considered for the position of secretary of state, but was ultimately passed over for Senator Marco Rubio. The president-elect’s transition team declined to comment on the potential appointment. Grenell did not respond to requests for comment.
