Martin Makary selected as the new FDA Commissioner

President-elect Donald Trump has announced that he has selected Dr. Martin Makary, a Johns Hopkins surgeon, as the Food and Drug Administration (FDA) commissioner. Trump expressed concerns that the FDA has lost the trust of Americans and has strayed from its main goal as a regulator. Makary will be working under Robert F. Kennedy Jr., Trump’s nominee for health secretary, to address chemicals in the food supply and drugs, particularly in relation to Childhood Chronic Disease Epidemic.

The FDA is responsible for ensuring the safety and efficacy of drugs, biological products, medical devices, and the nation’s food supply. Makary, born in Liverpool and raised in Baltimore, has an extensive background in medicine and public health. He has led initiatives such as The Surgical Checklist, which promotes patient safety in surgery. Makary has received awards for his work and currently heads the Evidence-Based Medicine and Public Policy Research Group at Johns Hopkins.

Makary’s appointment indicates Trump’s intention to address concerns about the FDA’s performance and to prioritize public health and safety. His experience in healthcare and advocacy for patient safety initiatives suggest that he is well-equipped to lead the FDA in addressing regulatory challenges and addressing public health issues.
