Honolulu Zoo Implements ‘Strict Protocols’ to Safeguard Birds from Avian Flu

Honolulu Zoo Implements Precautions Amid Avian Influenza Threat

WAIKIKI, Hawaii (KHON2) — In light of rising cases of Highly Pathogenic Avian Influenza (HPAI), Honolulu Zoo officials are taking proactive measures to protect their most at-risk species from the virus. This decision comes nearly two weeks after a variant of avian flu was confirmed at the Wahiawa Wastewater Treatment Facility, with further links to a backyard flock in Central Oahu and the Mililani Pet Fair.

The H5N1 virus, known for its contagious nature among birds, prompted the zoo to isolate its most susceptible species into enclosed aviaries, leading to the closure of their walk-through aviary in the Savanna. Zoo representatives expressed their commitment to safeguarding their endangered animals, emphasizing the importance of following strict biosecurity protocols to prevent disease transmission to both staff and animals.

As part of their ongoing response, the Honolulu Zoo is prepared to adapt their operations, which may include animal relocations and additional biosecurity measures if the risk escalates. Officials highlighted that free-roaming wildlife, such as ducks, chickens, and peacocks, along with cats and mongoose, could act as vectors for the virus, thus raising concerns for zoo animals.

Visitors to the zoo are advised not to feed wild animals to minimize the risk of exposure. The public is also urged to maintain a safe distance of at least six feet from any wild, sick, or dead birds encountered. Any observations of sick or deceased birds should be reported to the Hawaii Department of Agriculture Animal Industry Division at (808) 483-7192 or (808) 837-8092.

As the situation develops, the Honolulu Zoo remains vigilant in its efforts to protect its animal residents from potential health threats.
