Rep. Marjorie Taylor Greene to Lead New House Oversight Subcommittee on Government Efficiency

Rep. Marjorie Taylor Greene announced on Thursday that she will chair a newly-formed House Oversight subcommittee aimed at enhancing government efficiency and cutting wasteful spending. This subcommittee, established by House Oversight and Accountability Chairman James R. Comer (R-Ky.), is designed to collaborate with President-elect Donald Trump’s upcoming Department of Government Efficiency (DOGE), which will be led by notable figures including Tesla founder Elon Musk and entrepreneur Vivek Ramaswamy.

The initiative seeks to identify and investigate instances of waste and fraud within the federal government, with the intention of providing transparency to taxpayers. "Wasteful government spending must end, and taxpayers deserve to see their money used effectively and efficiently," Comer stated. Greene echoed this sentiment, vowing to expose corruption and inefficiencies through hearings.

Trump has set an ambitious target for DOGE, aiming for it to deliver recommendations for cost-cutting across federal departments and agencies by July 4, 2026. Musk has suggested that the federal budget could potentially be reduced by "at least $2 trillion" without impacting entitlement programs like Medicare and Medicaid, which typically require congressional action to modify.

The proposed changes would focus on slashing discretionary spending, affecting areas ranging from the Pentagon to NASA. In their Wall Street Journal op-ed, Musk and Ramaswamy emphasized their intention to serve solely as outside volunteers rather than federal employees while collaborating with the Office of Management and Budget to seek cost-saving measures.

With the establishment of this House subcommittee, Congress is positioned to play a pivotal role in realizing the objectives laid out by DOGE and fostering a more efficient government.
