Mexico Prepared to Welcome Deported Nationals from the U.S. if Needed

Mexico Prepares for Possible Mass Deportations by Incoming Trump Administration

Mexico City, Mexico — In response to potential mass deportations of undocumented immigrants by the incoming U.S. administration, Mexican President Claudia Sheinbaum announced on Thursday that Mexico has a plan in place to receive deported citizens. She emphasized that the goal is to demonstrate to President-elect Donald Trump and his administration that such deportations would be unnecessary due to the vital contributions Mexicans make to the U.S. economy, including the taxes they pay.

"We will receive Mexicans and we have a plan for it, but before that, we will work to demonstrate that they do not have to deport our compatriots," Sheinbaum stated. She argued that migrants should not be viewed as criminals and stressed the importance of humanitarian rights when addressing migration issues.

Trump, who takes office on January 20, has pledged a vigorous crackdown on immigration, with estimates from his running mate suggesting up to one million deportations annually. In light of this, Sheinbaum intends to present a "humanistic approach" focused on addressing root causes of migration during discussions with Trump.

Amidst these developments, two caravans of migrants are making their way toward the U.S. border. One caravan started just recently from southern Mexico, while the other has been traveling for two weeks but has seen its numbers decrease significantly from an initial 3,000 participants. Meanwhile, Mexico’s National Guard has been actively confronting these migrants to prevent their advance.

Sheinbaum’s cabinet will convene to discuss critical issues, including migration, trade, and security, posed by the forthcoming Trump administration.
