A volcano near Iceland’s capital Reykjavik erupted for the tenth time in three years, with the most recent eruption beginning at 11:14 p.m. local time on Wednesday. The eruption took place east of the Blue Lagoon, a geothermal spa resort in Svartsengi, causing the evacuation and closure of the resort for safety measures. Lava crossed a road and reached a hot water pipeline, prompting concerns about infrastructure damage. Despite the eruption, there were no disruptions to air traffic reported. Authorities had warned of volcanic activity in the area as magma accumulated beneath the peninsula, about 20 miles southwest of Reykjavik. The most recent eruption in the area had ended on September 6. The Icelandic meteorological office stated that there had been no noticeable increase in seismic activity in the past few weeks. Stunning images and aerial videos captured the volcano spewing bright orange and yellow lava into the sky, highlighting the intense natural phenomenon.
