Meadow Gold Dairies Announces Layoffs Amid Operational Transition
Meadow Gold Dairies Hawaii LLC, the last remaining dairy processor in the state, is set to lay off nearly 100 employees as part of a significant operational shift. The Waipahu-based company filed a notice on Friday with the state Department of Labor and Industrial Relations, revealing plans to discontinue “substantially all” of its warehousing and distribution operations.
In a statement, Meadow Gold explained that it will collaborate with Hawaii Foodservice Alliance for managing warehousing and distribution for retail, schools, and frozen products, and with Pacific Provisions Hawaii for food service distribution. These partnerships aim to enhance operational efficiency while maintaining the quality standards that customers expect.
“Despite dedicated efforts, meeting our distribution and service standards has been a constant challenge,” the company stated. By transitioning away from in-house distribution, Meadow Gold intends to focus on expanding local production and investing in value-added manufacturing, reinforcing its commitment to Hawaii’s dairy industry and sustainability.
The layoffs, which will affect 99 employees, are expected to take effect by January 15. The affected positions include commercial truck drivers, warehouse supervisors, and sales representatives, alongside a costume character and a singing mascot associated with the brand. The job reductions will primarily impact employees on Oahu, Hawaii Island, Maui, and Kauai, with the union representing seven employees on Kauai.
Meadow Gold emphasized its commitment to support any adversely affected employees during this transition. While the company will halt operations at its other warehouse locations, it will continue to operate its production facility in Hilo and further develop its manufacturing site in Kapolei, aiming to strengthen its long-term viability and community support.
