Press Release: BIIF Basketball Season Launches with Dominant Performances
The Big Island Interscholastic Federation (BIIF) basketball season commenced this week, building on the momentum established at Hilo’s preseason tournament over the weekend.
In the girls’ basketball opener, Kamehameha Schools-Hawai‘i (KSH) displayed a powerful performance against Hawaii Preparatory Academy (HPA), securing a decisive 34-20 victory on Tuesday night at Castle Gymnasium. The Warriors set the tone early, dominating the first quarter 10-0 and heading into halftime with a substantial 21-4 lead. Although HPA improved in the second half, outscoring KSH 16-13, it wasn’t sufficient to close the gap created by KSH’s strong start. Kacie Febo-Santiago led the Warriors with a game-high nine points, supported by Maci Lonokapu with six, and Shailan Benevides alongside Xiona Yagin each contributing five points. HPA’s Rosey Wawner scored six points in the effort.
KSH will face Christian Liberty Academy next on Monday night in Kea‘au, while HPA will host Ka‘u at 3 p.m. today.
In a separate matchup, Honoka‘a dominated Kealakehe with a staggering 51-12 victory. The Dragons showcased their prowess with relentless defense and high-scoring offense. Telia Laeli was a standout player, scoring 27 points, while Ava Tabucbuc added 13 points. Kealakehe’s Tamara Farmer-Duarte led her team with six points.
Honoka‘a’s upcoming matchup has yet to be announced, but Kealakehe will look to bounce back as they prepare to travel to face Konawaena on Tuesday inside Ellison Onizuka Gymnasium.
The BIIF basketball season promises to deliver exciting matchups as teams strive for dominance on the court.
