Super Typhoon Kong-rey, the biggest typhoon to hit Taiwan in decades, has led to the suspension of schools and businesses as the island braces for heavy rains and strong winds. With a storm radius of 320km, the typhoon is expected to make landfall on the sparsely-populated east coast on Thursday. The Taiwan Ministry of Defence has put 36,000 troops on standby for rescue efforts, while 1,300 people have been evacuated from high-risk areas. The weather administration forecasts up to 1.2 meters of rainfall and damaging wind speeds along coastal areas.
Warnings have been issued for destructive winds exceeding 160 km/h in Taitung county. The storm, more powerful than Typhoon Gaemi, has already caused injuries and damage, including trees being knocked down and mudslides. Hundreds of flights have been cancelled, and ferry services have been suspended. Taipei residents have reported heavy rain and wind, forcing the suspension of the subway system. The storm is expected to graze China’s Fujian province on Friday. Authorities have urged residents to take precautions and stay safe during the severe weather conditions.
